Mounting a TV over a fireplace is one of the most popular requests we get, and one of the most often done badly. Too much heat, the wrong anchors in stone, or a screen so high it strains your neck. We plan the install around all three so it looks great and is comfortable to watch.
What we check first
- Heat. We check how hot the wall gets above your mantel with the fireplace running. TV manufacturers list a maximum operating temperature, and the wall above some fireplaces gets warmer than that. A deeper mantel or a heat deflector can help.
- Wall material. Natural stone, manufactured stone, brick, tile over cement board and drywall chimney chases each need different drill bits and anchors.
- Viewing height. Above a fireplace the TV naturally sits higher than ideal. We measure from your seating and recommend a tilting or pull-down mount when needed.
- Wiring route. Where the power and HDMI will come from, and whether they can run inside the chase or need a discreet cover.
Mount options for fireplaces
Low-profile tilting mount
Keeps the TV close to the wall and angles the screen down toward your seating. A good fit when the mantel is at a moderate height.
Pull-down mantel mount
The screen lowers to eye level when you watch, then lifts back above the fireplace when you’re done. This is the most comfortable option for tall mantels and large TVs.
Full-motion mount
Useful in corner fireplaces or open-concept rooms where you want to angle the TV toward the kitchen or dining area.
Gas, electric and wood fireplaces
Electric fireplaces usually produce little heat at the top and are the easiest to mount above, although some models vent warm air from the front top edge. Gas fireplaces vary a lot by model and mantel depth. Wood-burning fireplaces produce the most heat and smoke, and we’ll be honest if mounting directly above one isn’t a good idea for your TV.
Installing a new electric fireplace with a TV above it? We can plan both together so the TV, fireplace insert and wiring line up perfectly.
Fireplace surfaces we mount on
From stacked stone to tile and drywall chases, each surface gets the right bit and anchor.
Drywall on wood studs
Lag bolts into at least two studs. The most common install in houses.
Steel studs
Common in condos and newer basements. We use toggle anchors rated for steel framing.
Brick and block
Sleeve anchors drilled into solid brick, not the mortar joints.
Natural and manufactured stone
Masonry bits and careful placement on fireplaces and feature walls.
Poured concrete
Hammer-drilled concrete anchors for condo walls and basements.
Plaster and lath
Older homes in the lower city. Pilot holes first so the plaster doesn't crack.
Fireplace TV mounting FAQs
Is it safe to mount a TV above a fireplace?
Often, yes, as long as the wall above the mantel stays within your TV’s operating temperature and the mount is anchored properly into the masonry or framing. We check the heat and the wall before recommending it.
How high should a TV be above a fireplace?
As low as the mantel safely allows. If the screen would still sit well above eye level, a tilting or pull-down mount makes it comfortable to watch.
Can you drill into my stone fireplace without damaging it?
Yes. We use masonry bits at the right speed, drill into solid stone or brick rather than mortar joints where possible, and use anchors rated for the TV’s weight.
Can the wires be hidden on a fireplace wall?
On drywall chases we can often run cables inside. On stone or brick we use a slim cover along the side of the fireplace, or route cables through the mantel where possible.
Do you install the TV above an electric fireplace too?
Yes. Electric fireplace and TV combinations are a popular setup, and we can plan the TV position, insert and wiring together.
